What’s New with Cosmetic Fillers?
On October 23, 2013, the FDA approved Juvederm Volume XC as “the first and only filler to temporarily correct age-related volume loss in the cheek area.” The results in the studies lasted up to 2 years. This is an exciting addition to the world of cosmetic injectables! Initially, fillers were used to “fill in” lines around the mouth or so called “parentheses” area. Now with an emphasis on volume replacement, not only is the cheek area restored to a more youthful look, but the lower face is lifted by the increased volume of the cheeks. As a result, you need less filler in the folds/lines around the mouth.
As we age, we lose volume in the cheeks. This leads to a flattening of the area just under the eyes and the skin appears to drop, or sag, in the region of the lower face. By replacing this volume, it appears as a natural lift and softening agent. It can also improve the appearance of the under eye hollow as well. This is not about a new Hollywood trend for full cheeks; if injected correctly, it simply replaces the volume a patient has lost with aging, while in turn will present a very natural look.
Juvederm Voluma XC was first introduced in Europe in 2005 and is currently distributed in 72 countries. It is made from a modified form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is an organic complex sugar that occurs naturally in the body. Juvederm Voluma XC is very similar to other Juvederm products, which have been used safely and effectively since June 6, 2006.
Juvederm Voluma XC has been approved for patients between the ages of 35 to 65. It has not been studied in patients over the age of 65. Juvederm Voluma XC contains lidocaine to minimize pain, so if you have an allergy or sensitivity to lidocaine, you may not be a candidate for this procedure.
Overall, Juvederm Voluma XC is a safe, non-synthetic filler that gives quicker results for age related volume loss and can last up to 2 years. The results I have seen since injecting the product are natural and subtle, with patients being very pleased with the outcome. This is exciting news in the world of facial cosmetic rejuvenation!

Before and After Pictures
Commonly Asked Questions What is Juvederm Voluma XC? This is a newly FDA-approved dermal filler made from a hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is something our bodies naturally produce on their own. However, in this form, it is utilized as a volume replacer. How many syringes will I need? Every client is different when it comes to how many syringes are needed. During the consultation, pictures will be taken and from that an accurate number can be determined. The number of syringes needed will be discussed after the consultation, and prior to the injection so no one is surprised by the price amount. Will I bruise? Some bruising may occur, but everyone is a little different. Generally, the bruising is minimal but can occur for up to 2 weeks. Some products or medications can help with the bruising, or even make it worse, but will be discussed in further detail during the consultation. How long will it take to see a difference? Effects from the Juvederm Voluma XC are instantaneous. Please see the video below to watch the subtle lift and contouring happen directly after the injection. Is it safe to use? Like I mentioned above, Juvederm Voluma XC is made from a hyaluronic acid that is naturally formed from an organic complex sugar that occurs in our bodies. Although it was approved by the FDA in October 2013, Juvederm Voluma XC has been injected beginning in Europe in 2005. There have not been any studies performed on patients over the age of 65, or pregnant or nursing women. Juvederm Voluma XC can be used in conjunction with other injectibles (like BOTOX, Juvederm XC, or Restylane) to acheive optimal results. How long will it last? The effects from the filler can last up to 2 years with optimal correction, meaning that the volume loss has been fully corrected. At 3 months post injection, we will re-evaluate and see if a touch-up is necessary. During that follow-up, pictures will be taken again so we can compare the difference in the contouring of your face. What areas of the face can Juvederm Voluma XC be injected? Right now it is only approved for the cheek area. As we age, we lose volume mostly in our cheeks. By replacing this volume with Voluma, there will be a subtle lift and contouring that can also help improve other areas of the face. Some areas include but are not limited to the under eye hollow, the corners of the mouth, and possibly even soften the parentheses lines around the mouth area. Who is a good candidate for this injectible? As I mentioned before, the effects from the Juvederm Voluma XC have not been studied on patients who are over the age of 65, or on pregnant or nursing women. Anyone who is between the ages of 35 and 65 typically will find the best results, although Voluma is FDA-approved for patients even as young as 21. During the consultation, your medical history is discussed to determine if you are a good candidate for this filler. Juvederm Voluma XC also contains lidocaine to help minimize the pain, so if you have an allergy or sensitivity to lidocaine, you may not be a good candidate. Is there any downtime after the injection? After this particular filler, we advise you to go straight home and rest. Using cool compresses for the afternoon is strongly recommended to help with swelling and bruising, so normal activities can resume. Also, do not exercise for a period of 24 to 48 hours following this injection. Does it hurt? Topical numbing is applied prior to having the injection, and Juvederm Voluma XC is also infused with a lidocaine to help combat the pain. Using a cold compress on the area right before I inject seems to decrease the pain a little as well. Everyone's sensitivity to pain is different, but I will try and make the experience as painless as possible. What are the side effects? Side effects can include but are not limited to temporary swelling, soreness, and/or possible bruising. These side effects can be discussed in more detail during the medical history section of the consultation. How much does it cost? All pricing will be discussed in the initial consultation. Consultations are free of charge and required prior to having any injectible performed. Please call (864)233-8088 to schedule the consultation.
